Overview
Big Buck Down (BBD) Outfitters, a renowned whitetail deer hunting service in Southeast Iowa, manages over 6,500 acres and more than 30 food plots to create a premier hunting experience. However, they faced a recurring challenge: cultivating clover in shaded areas on their vast property. After experimenting with several local clover options, owner Corbin Millard turned to Thunder Ridge Outdoors, discovering that their Ridgeline Triple Diamond Clover was uniquely suited for shaded environments.
The Challenge
For Corbin, a key part of enhancing the hunting experience was ensuring healthy, accessible food plots. He noted that clearing trees and planting clover in strategic areas allowed hunters closer, clearer shots—20-30 yards instead of shots through dense woods. But finding a clover variety that thrived under partial shade conditions proved difficult, as many clover types require direct sunlight and meticulous maintenance.
Solution with Ridgeline Triple Diamond Clover
Corbin found a solution in Ridgeline Triple Diamond Clover, a shade-tolerant seed mix developed to flourish in low-light areas. “We finally have something that grows in the shade,” Corbin said, excited about the results. To reduce the usual high maintenance of clover plots, Corbin also incorporated Thunderstorm Fertilizer, which simplified care while encouraging robust growth.
The success was so notable that Corbin planted the same clover mix on his own personal property, appreciating the low-maintenance, high-yield outcome.
Results and Expansion
BBD Outfitters has successfully planted over 60 acres of Triple Diamond Clover across the property, with plans for further expansion. Additionally, Thunderstorm Fertilizer is now a staple in their food plot regimen. The early-season results have been outstanding, particularly for youth hunts, which traditionally saw lower yield. With the added boost from applying the fertilizer 7-10 days before hunting, plots are established earlier in the season, providing optimal conditions for both early hunts and ongoing property management. Corbin and the team at Thunder Ridge Outdoors are excited to see the trophies brought down in Iowa this year!
